Visualisation: protection from criticism

We all crave respect and belonging, so criticism naturally hurts. While it's unrealistic to completely ignore others' opinions, therapy can help us learn to not take things too personally. The key is knowing when to use criticism constructively and when to shield ourselves from negativity. Start by using this simple visualisation to nurture healthy self-esteem. [24.10.24.]

Behavioural psychologist B.F. Skinner (1904-1990) once said, “A failure is not always a mistake, it may simply be the best one can do under the circumstances. The real mistake is to stop trying.” This links well with negative criticism. When someone criticises us, we may feel angry and misunderstood. Being negatively evaluated could stop us in our tracks, thinking: “what’s the point of trying?” The point is to not stop at someone’s criticism but to use it to propel us to new heights.

We have the power to choose whether criticism is helpful or hurtful. Focus on what's constructive and let go of the rest. Often, hurt people project their frustrations onto others. By asking, "What's helpful in this criticism?" we can shift from self-doubt to finding solutions.

Visualisation: Protection from criticism

  1. Acknowledge: Notice the words that hurt and how they affect your body (tightness, shallow breathing).

  2. Allow: Let the discomfort exist without avoiding it. Breathe deeply and observe it without judgment.

  3. Visualize Protection: Imagine a glass wall between you and the criticism, letting the hurtful words fade away.

  4. Helpful criticism: At the core of criticism lies a truth that, though hard to hear, can help us grow. By embracing that truth, we can use it as feedback to push us forward.

  5. Release: Shake off lingering tension with deep breaths to clear stored emotions.
